Assignment of Rights (AOR) Explained
The cost of installing a heat pump can be expensive compared to the cost of a natural gas boiler. To help cover this cost difference the UK Government set up the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme in 2014 and provides financial subsidies for renewable heating systems to households spread over 7 years.

However, households still need to make the initial investment which can be too high for some people. To help alleviate this problem the Government has put in place a scheme that allows a registered investor, to provide up to 100% of the cost of installing a heat pump in domestic properties. This funding is provided to households on the basis of them transferring the 7 years of RHI payment to the investor under the government-approved agreement called the Assignment of Rights. The heat pump is owned by the household not the investor.
